Doctor of Business Administration [DBA]

University and Program Overview

Designed for senior management-level staff, the University DBA programme emphasises contemporary management thinking and substantial applied research projects that will help learners advance their career to the next level.

As a professional doctorate, the programme aims to provide management professionals and practitioners with extensive opportunities to reflect upon that add value to their experiences and expertise.

Through structured interactions with the faculty and a select group of dedicated colleagues from diverse industries and backgrounds, learners will also enhance their personal and leadership skills while extending their business networking abilities. University's DBA is a three-year programme.

The objectives of the University DBA programme are:

  • Extend and build upon past experiences together with academic attainments to map each individual's professional management career.
  • Intensify and apply participants' managerial skills, capabilities and competencies to effectively confront challenges in the global business environment.
  • Develop strategic understanding and interest in local, regional and global developments impinging upon business and management.

Teaching and Assessment Structure

The University DBA programme provides students with relevant, interesting and stimulating experiences via a variety of innovative teaching and learning techniques. The dynamic learning process involves various methods. Methodology and pedagogy varies to include: lectures, case methods, team-based approach, active learning, group research assignments, report writing, guest speakers, presentations and seminars. Furthermore, the small class size creates a collaborative, highly-interpersonal environment for graduate business and management education.

The first seven courses are assessed differently from the final DBA thesis course. For each, a series of coursework assessment will be adopted including class participation, individual presentation and written assignment.

The DBA thesis course would be supervised by a designated DBA supervisor appointed by University. The length of the thesis will be approximately 50,000 words. The thesis would be examined by 1 internal examiner and two external examiners with, viva-voce.

Depending on your progress, you will be ready for the postgraduate colloquium where you will have the opportunity to present your work to your peers and other stakeholders during your second or third year.

Cyprus Institute of Management

PROGRAMME OF RESEARCH & RELATED FIELDS

1. A candidate for the degree of Ph.D. is required to satisfactorily investigate and evaluate, or to undertake a critical study of a chosen topic or topics, and to show lucidity in the presentation of the Thesis and understanding of the context and significance of the work. A candidate for the degree of Ph.D. is also expected to successfully complete a programme of work that results in a significant contribution to knowledge.

2. The programme of research must be such as to enable the student to acquire competence in the methods of research and scholarship, and to display sustained independent effort.

3. The application for registration should set out as systematically and fully as is practicable, the candidate's intended programme of work as it is seen at that time. Where necessary, consideration will be given to any subsequent request to modify the title of the research or the programme of work.

4. The area of study of the candidate's programme, the objectives of the investigation, its relationship to previous work in the same field and the methods of approach, must in all cases be stated in the application. Normally, the topics within the programme must also be defined in the application, but detailed specification of topics is not essential when either it is known initially that there may be more than one topic, but the nature of the subsequent topic (s) cannot be defined at that stage, or it is not feasible to provide a detailed account of the proposed investigation.

5. A candidate is normally expected to continue on the same topic throughout the registration period. Where new circumstances make a change or extension of topic desirable, a supplementary application by letter must be submitted.

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must hold: • A Bachelors degree or equivalent qualification / A Masters degree The level of attainment for the Bachelors degree will normally be equivalent to that of a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours Bachelors degree. Professional qualifications and relevant experience may be taken into account for entry to a Ph.D programme where applicants do not have a Bachelors degree. All applicants must have a Masters degree. For the Masters degree, we require an overall grade of 60 or above; B or above; GPA of 3 or above. Grading schemes of some institutions may vary - please provide an official grading scheme with your transcripts.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY You will be exempt from providing the IELTS/ TOEFL/Pearson score if you are a native English speaker, are a current student of OR have graduated from a UK institution or country where English is the first language within the last five years. If you do not meet the above criteria you need to demonstrate your English proficiency by taking one of the following tests: IELTS, TOEFL or Pearson (PTE). The minimum overall score required is:

• IELTS: 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each component)
• TOEFL: 100 internet-based (with a minimum of 25 in each component - internet based) or 623 paper-based.
• Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE): 66 (with a minimum of 51 in each component)
In exceptional cases, an IELTS score of 6.5 (or TOEFL 594 paper-based/90 internet-based or PTE 59) will be considered if you can demonstrate exceptional academic achievement. However, you must have achieved the minimum component scores in your particular test. Evidence of exceptional performance is:
• Distinction level performance in Masters Qualifications, or
• Previous research output published in high quality academic journals.

Evidence of your exceptional achievements (such as transcripts, copies of articles) should be accompanied by a short supporting statement from you. Without this supporting statement, your application will not be considered.

RESEARCH PROPOSAL All applicants to the Ph.D programme are required to submit a research proposal. Your application will be considered as incomplete unless a proposal is included. The research proposal is used to assess your aptitude for doctoral research and your ability to outline a research project that is suitable for a Ph.D. We also recommend that you provide a personal statement outlining your general interests in studying a Ph.D, your personal motivations for doing so and any flexibility in your chosen area(s) of research.
